New forecast for the development of bio-plastic market in China

SusTech Consult has conducted a survey of more than 100 plastic processing companies in China this year to learn about their attitudes toward bioplastics. Of the companies surveyed, 75 per cent were domestic enterprises and 25 per cent were sino-foreign joint ventures. Ninety-five per cent of the companies surveyed said they had not been exposed to bioplastics, and said biological materials were less important than renewable, energy efficient or non-hazardous materials. When asked why they didn't use bioplastics, 38 percent of the companies surveyed thought their prices were higher, but 18 percent said they knew nothing about bioplastics. "It confirms what we see and hear in this industry," Rudnik said. They don't think western material suppliers are interested in them." Nearly half of the respondents (47%) said that increasingly strict rules of law will prompt them to consider using the plastic, but many people do not think, plastic will be popular in the local market in a short time. Only 4 per cent of companies surveyed believe bioplastics will account for more than 5 per cent of China's plastic consumption over the next five years. Up to 78 percent of people predicted six to 10 years. At the meeting, Rodnik also said the plastics industry needed to know the heterogeneity of the Asian bioplastics market. "Thailand, for example, is a large raw material grower and the world's second-largest sugar exporter," he said. Japan, on the other hand, is an important research and development centre that aims to target bioplastics but is not a real source of raw material.
